Discover the most important things to know about healthcare in Spain.

Known as one of Europe’s best healthcare systems, healthcare in Spain is free for EEA citizen owning the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). Below, you will find all the information you’ll need to know before taking a trip to Spain not to be caught by surprise.

European Health Insurance Card

The European Health Insurance Card, also known as EHIC or Tarjeta Sanitaria Europea, is a free Insurance Card issued by the EEA state members.

This card allows you to receive most medical care for free or at reduced-cost when travelling within the EEA. However, the EHIC doesn’t cover private and nonurgent medical care, dentists and in those cases where treatment is the sole purpose of your trip.

Likewise, be aware that some treatments that are free in your home country may not be free in Spain. In this case, the EHIC won’t cover them. The most effective way to have your health care covered, even if it is a private healthcare treatment that you need, is to buy a travel insurance policy covering emergency medical coverage, among other occurrences, such as trip cancellation. As a plus, most travel insurances cover emergency medical expenses both abroad and within your home country.

When buying the travel insurance policy, check whether is the company that pays for medical costs firsthand or if you have to bear the costs and then get a refund once you’re back home. In the latter case, remember to keep all documentation as well as medical bills.

Bi-lateral health agreements are available between Spain and the following non-EU countries, allowing citizens travelling to Spain to receive free medical treatment:

  • Andorra
  • Argentina
  • Australia
  • Brasil
  • Cape Verde
  • Canada
  • Chile
  • Colombia
  • Dominican Republic
  • Ecuador
  • Korea
  • Japan
  • Morocco
  • Mexico
  • Paraguay
  • Peru
  • Philippines
  • Russia
  • Tunisia
  • Ukraine
  • Uruguay
  • USA
  • Venezuela

Centros de salud

Health centres (centros de salud) are the primary health care service for Spaniards. It is there where doctors visit their patients. Like a Spanish person, you will have to ask for a visit after registering with a specific doctor. However, in case of emergency and if you’re on a trip in Spain, the centros de salud provide first-aid help in Urgencias (casualty).

Every district has its own Centro de Salud and, depending on the town or city you’re visiting, you can even find more than one health centre close to your holiday accommodation.

Pharmacies

Pharmacies throughout Spain usually open

  • Monday to Friday: from 9.30 am to 2 pm, and from 5 pm to 9.30 pm
  • Saturday: from 9.30 to 2 pm

However, most pharmacies have their own opening hours, usually from 9.30 am to 10 pm, especially in the cities. If you’re in need of a pharmacy and it happens to be closed, you will find the name of the nearest 24-hour duty pharmacy (farmacía de guardia) on the door.

If you’re in Malaga province, you can look through Malaga’s farmacías de guardia by clicking here and then, selecting the area and the town you’re interested in.

Pharmacists offer useful advice and sell medicines both with and without prescription.

Drinkable water in Andalucia

Andalucia’s tap water is usually safe to drink. However, as villas located in rural areas may supply water from wells, it is advisable you always drink bottled water.

  • We are coming on holiday to Mojacar next week, my husband has terminal cancer on palliative care.
He is unable to get private insurance cover but has a EHIC card, would this be sufficient to cover any other illness like infection or similar while we are there.
